Lace: A decorative mesh of interlaced threadwork which is plaited, knotted, looped and turned to make either simple or complicated patterns and raised work.
Laid (invitations): A type of paper that is thicker and has more texture to it, but is slick like vellum.
La minute: Style of preparation where the food is cooked to order fresh, often right before the guests. Food stations are often ‘a la minute.’
Latticework: A cake frosting technique that criss-crosses with an open pattern that zigzags.
Layers (invitations): This term indicates layers of paper tied or glued together. If the top layer is translucent and the lower is decorative paper, you’ll see a muted version of the lower layer through the translucent top.
Lazo: A rope used in some culture to tie the bride and groom together during the wedding ceremony.
Leg o´ Mutton Sleeves: Sleeves that are very full at the shoulder and narrow to become very fitted at the forearm.
Letterpress: A very formal and very expensive process of printing invitations. A very involved process, this is created by stamping an impression into the invitation papers. This process works best with thicker papers.
Light Support Hosiery: Pantyhose made with a low denier spandex in the leg to give light compression.
Linear editing: The process by which video footage is transferred directly from the camera and edited using multiple VCRs or viewing systems. This technology is considered outdated, in favor of the less expensive computer editing systems called Non-Linear Editing.
Linen finish: A type of paper with more texture than cotton papers.
Long Hand (invitations): The writing of numbers and dates in alpha form used in formal stationery; i.e. "on Saturday, the fifteenth of December, Two thousand and seven".
Loupe: Magnifying glass usually of 10X used to look at jewelry up-close.
Luminarias: Bags filled with sand and candles to create glowing lights. Often used to line pathways or aisles.
